Shingle Roof Repair - Davis Roofing

Repairing a Shingle Roof
Shingle roof repair can become necessary after a storm or just from normal wear and tear throughout the years. Despite being a durable and long-lasting material, there will come a time when shingles will need to be replaced and other repairs made. At Davis Roofing, we have over 65 years of combined experience as roofing contractor. We can solve your roofing problems with efficiency and quality.

Asphalt Shingles
The most popular roofing material in the United States, asphalt shingle are either organic or fiberglass. Both types have their benefits, as well as being affordable and resilient. They come in a variety of colors and offer the traditional style appealing to many homeowners.

Organic – These types of shingles contain much more asphalt than their fiberglass counterparts. This makes them heavier, which in turn makes them much more efficient for cold weather locations. They have a Class C rating in fire protection which is the lowest rating, but most shingles can be treated to improve them to Class A or B.

Fiberglass – These shingles were developed in the 1980’s. They use very little asphalt and utilize a fiberglass weave instead. Because of this, they are lighter and thinner but equally as strong as their organic counterpart. Commonly used in the South, their small amount of asphalt makes them last longer in the blistering heat. They have a Class A rating for fire protection.

Shingle roof repair often becomes necessary due to poor installation. Using proper techniques and maintenance, repairs shouldn’t be needed often. Proper installation all begins with the roof decking. This is the wood base that the rest of the roofing materials are attached to. Some contractors may use a wood with a veneer or one that has been treated with a fire retardant. These types might not hold up as well to moisture and deteriorate over time, creating the need for extensive shingle roof repair and possible replacement.

Once the decking is installed, and underlayment is applied. This “felt paper” provides protection to your home from moisture both before and after the shingles are attached. It isn’t uncommon for rain to move in during the roofing process. The underlayment will protect your home, but installers should monitor the amount of wrinkling that occurs from the water.

If the wrinkling is severe, it can affect the appearance of the shingles and can even leave small gaps that are vulnerable to water seeping between the shingles. Exposed underlayment is vulnerable to punctures and leaks causing further need for shingle roof repair.

There are different types of metal pieces called flashing that are installed around edges and valleys to provide additional moisture protection. There are pieces of flashing that are specifically designed to fit around pipes and other protrusions. Inadequately installed flashing can lead to severe moisture damage. Shingle roof repair may become necessary to fix denting and alignment of the flashing.

After a Storm
Most commonly, shingle roof repair is needed after inclement weather. Severe thunderstorms and tornados bring high winds, heavy rains and hail. While your shingle surface is designed to last, some damage can be done that needs to be fixed immediately.

On all asphalt shingles, there is a mineral granule coating that protects the mat from sunlight, UV rays and weather. Hail and torrential downpours can cause loss of these protective granules making the shingles less effective. As long the damage is not widespread, it can be resolved by shingle roof repair.

Because of the way shingles are overlapped to prevent moisture from getting underneath them, they can be peeled off if high winds catch them at the right angle. You may lose several shingles in a storm. We work with a wide variety of manufacturers and should be able to find a perfect match.
